A trade association leader in Hobro, North Jutland, has warned that illegal vehicle traffic in the town’s pedestrian zone could lead to a fatal collision, after repeated incidents of scooters, mopeds, and e-scooters speeding through the area despite clear prohibitions.
Peter Møller, chair of Hobro Handel and a local shopkeeper, told DR that pedestrians—particularly children and the elderly—are at risk of being struck by drivers flouting the rules. “People say they won’t come here anymore because it’s too dangerous,” he said. “But what worries me most is that we’ll have an accident where a child or an older person is hit and possibly killed.”
The pedestrian zone is marked with signs banning vehicles, but enforcement remains a challenge. Møller has filmed offenders and submitted evidence to police, yet the problem persists. When he confronts drivers, responses range from indifference to threats. “At best, they just keep going. At worst, I’m threatened with a beating,” he said.
North Jutland Police acknowledged the issue is not widespread across the region but confirmed targeted patrols in pedestrian zones as part of broader efforts to curb illegal moped use. Meanwhile, Hobro Handel has installed large reminder signs along the zone, though Møller admits such measures have had limited effect.
