Swedish police have identified 49 children as victims of sexual abuse after reviewing previously unexamined material seized in child exploitation investigations, public broadcaster SVT reports.
The victims—some unaware that images or videos of their abuse exist—were discovered during an intensive operation last week at police headquarters in Stockholm. Investigators from all seven Swedish police regions, alongside forensic audio and video specialists, examined chat logs, videos, and other abuse material collected in prior cases.
Christer Andersson of the National Operational Task Force against internet-related child abuse (Noa) confirmed the material included documentation of rape, posed imagery, and other forms of child sexual abuse. Police have since filed reports for each identified victim, though the status of investigations varies by region. Some children have been notified; others remain unaware.
The shift follows a 2024 policy change prioritizing victim identification over prosecuting possession offenses. Currently, only two of Sweden’s seven regions—Bergslagen and Öst—employ dedicated victim identification specialists. Other regions rely on temporary task forces.
Andersson noted improved IT tools and collaboration with Europol and Interpol have strengthened efforts but called for broader adoption of victim-centered approaches. Norwegian police have advanced further, using facial recognition technology to identify abused children—a method Swedish authorities have yet to implement.
Police stress that investigations into these cases remain a priority due to the severity of the crimes and the young age of the victims.
