Finland to repeal surgical castration ban for pigs

Finland’s agricultural and forestry committee has backed government plans to overturn a ban on the surgical castration of pigs, according to a committee statement reported by public broadcaster Yle.

The ban, introduced under former Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s administration, was set to take effect in 2035, prohibiting the practice for pigs kept as production animals. The committee argues that repealing the ban would prevent additional costs for the pork industry.

Opposition parties—the Greens, Left Alliance, and Social Democrats—filed dissenting opinions against the committee’s report.
