Minor earthquakes recorded near Sundhnúksgígur craters in Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland

This morning, a series of minor earthquakes were recorded near the Sundhnúksgígur craters in the Reykjanes Peninsula. A total of eight tremors occurred within a four-minute window around 10 a.m. According to a natural hazard monitoring group in the South of Iceland, these earthquakes were all below magnitude 1.

Jóhanna Malen Skúladóttir, a natural hazards specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, confirmed that the tremors ended at 9:25 a.m. There were no associated ground deformations or changes in activity observed in nearby wells, suggesting that there is currently no indication of impending volcanic activity in the area.

Since Friday, the Meteorological Office has not issued any updates regarding the volcanic activity zone. It has been reported that magma accumulation and land uplift beneath the Svartsengi area continue at a steady rate. Experts anticipate that a new magma intrusion and possibly an eruption could occur within the next two weeks.
