A young roe deer caused a brief commotion in central Kajaani on Tuesday after twice attempting to force its way into a grocery store and circling restaurant terraces, according to footage shared by the local S-Group cooperative on Instagram.

Security camera recordings from the Raati shopping centre show the animal charging at the store’s glass doors before retreating, then returning to push into the vestibule. Staff at the S-Market location described the noise as deafening, with myymäläpäällikkö Maarit Leiviskä telling Yle the impact was so violent they initially struggled to identify the source. “We didn’t even realise what was making the sound—just this terrible crashing,” she said.

The deer, which staff believe may have been startled, also spun through nearby outdoor dining areas before finally departing toward Raatihuoneentori square. No injuries to the animal or bystanders were reported. Leiviskä, who has worked in the region for over two decades, noted such incidents are rare: “Small birds sometimes fly in when the loading dock is open, but I’ve never seen larger wildlife try to enter.”

Wildlife officials estimate Finland’s roe deer population at 60,000–100,000, with sightings in urban areas increasing as their habitat expands.
