A two-year trial in Lolland Municipality is providing 100 severely obese residents with free weight-loss medication, dietary guidance, and exercise support, Danish broadcaster DR reports.
The programme, part-funded by pharmaceutical firm Novo Nordisk, aims to reduce participants’ doctor visits and increase workforce participation, potentially improving public finances. While no state funds are involved, critics argue the trial could set a precedent for taxpayer-funded weight-loss drugs.
One participant, Lena Weiss Laugesen, told DR the treatment had already brought her greater well-being.
