Porsche stolen in Helsinki ends in flowerbed after police chase to Vantaa
A suspected car thief led police on a high-speed chase from central Helsinki to Vantaa on Tuesday morning, crashing the stolen Porsche into a flowerbed after a 10-minute pursuit, according to a report by Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
The incident began when the thief stole the Porsche from a driver refuelling on Topeliuksenkatu in Helsinki. The owner reported the theft, and police quickly located the vehicle using its license plate. The chase ended in Vantaa’s Simonkylä and Koivukylä districts, where the suspect collided with a civilian car and a police vehicle before coming to a stop in a flowerbed. No injuries were reported.
Commissioner Aki Rantahuhta of the Eastern Uusimaa Police told Yle the pursuit carried significant risk, though the situation was resolved within minutes. The suspect, described as a middle-aged intoxicated man, was detained on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, and drunk driving.
The car’s owner told Yle the thief had approached his son at the fuel station, briefly engaged in conversation, then suddenly jumped into the Porsche and drove off. “It looked professional,” the owner said.
Police confirmed the suspect remains under investigation.
