Swedish crime writer Håkan Nesser will be released from Asptuna prison on Friday to serve the final two months of his sentence under house arrest with an electronic ankle monitor, regional news site Helagotland.se reports.

Nesser, convicted in 2024 of aggravated tax fraud and sentenced to 18 months in prison, will complete his term at his home on Gotland. The Swedish Prison and Probation Service approved the transfer, citing his good conduct and low risk of reoffending.

Earlier this month, authorities denied Nesser’s initial request for early release, arguing that his work as a writer lacked structured external employment. This time, his release is conditional on participating in scheduled activities with a local heritage association on Gotland.

Nesser’s son, Johannes Nesser, has previously criticized the prison service’s handling of the case, calling an earlier denial of release “vengeful.”

Nesser did not appeal the Swedish Tax Agency’s findings but sought to challenge them in court. Sweden’s Supreme Court has twice rejected his appeals.
