A two-stage international architecture competition to design a new 165,000-square-metre campus for the University of Oulu has been launched, with the winner to be selected in summer 2027, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The competition, described as exceptionally large by Finnish standards, will shape a consolidated campus in the Kontinkangas district adjacent to Oulu University Hospital. For the first time in the university’s history, all faculties will be housed in a single location, alongside student housing and supporting services.

Plans include 80,000 square metres for academic functions, 30,000 square metres for student accommodation, a 20,000-square-metre service centre for campus and hospital needs, and 35,000 square metres for other operations. The project coincides with the 150th anniversary of Finnish architecture competitions.

The anonymous, year-long competition is organised by the University of Oulu and the Northern Finland Student Housing Foundation (POAS), in collaboration with the City of Oulu, the North Ostrobothnia Wellbeing Services County (Pohde), and the Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA). The jury includes representatives from these bodies as well as the university’s student union.

Kirsti Rantanen, SAFA’s competition expert, noted the scale of the project has drawn significant interest from leading Finnish firms, though the extended timeline poses challenges for participants. The first phase closes in early October, with up to five finalists advancing to the second stage in January 2027.

Janne Pihlajaniemi, professor of architecture at the University of Oulu, emphasised that anonymous competitions provide emerging architects with opportunities while ensuring the university accesses the freshest ideas and expertise.
