Finnish distillery secures rare Game of Thrones whisky deal with Warner Bros.
Finnish rye whisky producer Kyrö Distillery has signed a two-year licensing agreement with Warner Bros. to produce two Game of Thrones-themed whiskies, a rare collaboration for a Nordic distillery, the company announced Monday.
The first batch of 14,000 bottles—7,000 each of two expressions aged in rum and oak casks—has already sold out in Finland and key export markets, including the US, China, and several European countries. The distillery, based in Isokyrö, declined to disclose financial terms but confirmed it will pay royalties to Warner Bros. based on sales.
“When we commit to something, we go all in,” said Matti Kovanen, Kyrö’s brand and marketing director, noting that negotiations spanned roughly a year. The deal’s success could extend the partnership beyond the initial two-year term, he added.
Industry observers called the agreement unprecedented for a Finnish distiller. “We haven’t seen anything like this before—an extraordinary achievement,” said Asko Ryynänen, chair of Finland’s Distillers’ Association. He suggested the high-profile tie-in, leveraging Game of Thrones’ enduring global appeal, could open doors for other Nordic producers in competitive international markets.
While the deal is expected to boost Kyrö’s visibility, it will not create new jobs at the distillery. The collaboration coincides with the 15th anniversary of Game of Thrones’ television debut, with new spin-off series The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms released this year and House of the Dragon’s third season set to premiere this summer.
