Finland’s Western Coast Guard has warned of increased satellite navigation interference in the Archipelago Sea and the waters west of Åland, marking a shift from previous disruptions concentrated in the Gulf of Finland.
The jamming, originating from Russia, is believed to target critical ports following recent Ukrainian drone strikes, according to Pekka Niittylä, deputy commander of the Western Finland Coast Guard. While the interference primarily affects offshore areas, its impact is reduced in sheltered archipelago waters due to terrain.
Vessels of all sizes may experience GPS receiver malfunctions, with larger ships facing the greatest navigational challenges. The Coast Guard advises mariners to carry and use traditional paper nautical charts as a backup. Shipping companies are reportedly prepared to rely on radar imaging and manual chart plotting if necessary.
Smaller boats, with GPS antennas positioned lower, are less susceptible to the interference.
