A man in his 20s has been detained in connection with a violent assault in Stavanger that left a man in his 30s with serious injuries, Dagbladet reports.

The suspect, arrested just before midnight, denies criminal responsibility and will appear in court Monday for a custody hearing, according to his defence lawyer Anne Kroken. Police have not yet questioned him but intend to do so, said police prosecutor Fredrik Martin Soma.

A second man, also in his 30s, was initially arrested and charged with attempted murder following the incident at a Tjensvold residence on Saturday afternoon. However, police released him after his account, witness statements, and further investigation weakened the case against him, Soma confirmed.

The victim remains hospitalised with serious injuries and has not yet been interviewed. Police believe the suspect and victim knew each other but have not established the nature of their relationship. “It is not a family connection, but we are investigating how they are acquainted,” Soma said.

Witnesses at the scene alerted emergency services, leading to the arrest of the 20-year-old at a private address.
