Sweden to Investigate Stricter Financial and Health Insurance Requirements for Family Reunification Immigration
At a press conference on Tuesday, Migration Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard and Ludvig Aspling, spokesperson for immigration policy of the Sweden Democrats, presented a new investigation to be undertaken. The investigation will look into tightening the financial requirements for family reunification immigration and whether full health insurance should be a requirement for a person to come to Sweden through this process.
“The financial requirements are primarily aimed at strengthening integration and are expected to increase the motivation for connected persons to find employment and become self-sufficient,” says Ludvig Aspling.
The investigation will also explore whether DNA analysis is needed in more cases to ensure the familial relationships between individuals.
“The use of DNA technology can be an important tool to protect children from being united with a person they are not actually related to,” says Aspling.
The current rules for family reunification immigration in Sweden are more generous than what EU law and other international commitments require, according to Maria Malmer Stenergard.
“Moreover, the Swedish regulatory framework is complicated and can be perceived as inconsistent,” she states. Both family reunification immigration to people with residence permits and Swedish citizens will be covered by the investigation, which is to be completed by August 2025.
