The Danish payment processor Nets resumed normal operations on Thursday after a more than five-hour outage that blocked card transactions across Denmark and parts of the Nordic region, according to Danish broadcaster DR.

The disruption began around 9:00 a.m., affecting payment terminals in shops, restaurants, parking facilities and thousands of other locations. Nets said in a press release that all card payments were on track to work again.

The company identified the cause as an internal error, but stated it was too early to draw final conclusions pending further analysis. Nets apologized for the inconvenience and said it was working to prevent similar incidents.

Some merchants used offline systems or MobilePay as interim solutions. Danish travelers abroad also reported payment problems.

Acting Business Minister Morten Bødskov has asked the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority to investigate the outage, calling it serious given a previous, shorter Nets outage last year.
