Kalsoy undersea tunnel estimated at three to four years, 600 million kroner
Building an undersea tunnel between Klaksvík and Syðradal on Kalsoy is expected to take three to four years and cost about 600 million kroner, KVF reports, citing tunnel expert Kristian Stórhamar.
The tunnel would be roughly four kilometres long. Stórhamar, who has extensive tunnel experience and worked on alternative routes for the Suðuroy tunnel, emphasised that the proposal is still in the idea stage and requires further geological surveys. He said the tunnel solution is not much more expensive than maintaining a ferry service.
Faroese Transport Minister Jacob Vestergaard plans to investigate the tunnel option before issuing a tender for a new Kalsoy ferry. Stórhamar’s estimate does not include the risk premium that the national infrastructure agency Landsverk typically adds, which can be up to 40 percent, raising the total cost to around 840 million kroner. The most promising route is just over four kilometres.
