Finnish television series “Kun saa rakastaa” (“When You Are Allowed to Love”) has won a Prix Circom award, one of Europe’s most prestigious honours for television journalism and digital audiovisual content, the Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.

The six-part series, filmed and produced in Tampere, received the award in the Diversity in Society category. It portrays the lives of Finnish sexual and gender minorities, featuring stories of double lives, coming out, self-acceptance and love.

The series was directed by Kirsi Marie Liimatainen, who is originally from Tampere. It is available for streaming on Yle Areena.

The Prix Circom gala and conference were hosted in Tampere for the first time in Finland, gathering nearly 300 media professionals from around 30 countries.

The award jury praised the series for its rare and touching depiction of older people belonging to sexual and gender minorities. According to the jury, the programme succeeds in getting close to its protagonists and allows them to speak openly about their experiences.
