Former Sweden Democrat MP Elsa Widding, now an independent politician, has been forced to leave her apartment in Stockholm due to threats she received following a vote on stricter citizenship requirements.

“It’s a fairly high price to pay,” she told SVT’s Politikbyrån.

Widding voted against the Tidö parties on a point regarding stricter citizenship requirements about two weeks ago. When Politikbyrån met her in parliament she said the threats escalated significantly after the vote.

“I blame Jimmie Åkesson. No, I shouldn’t say that… But it escalated a lot,” she said.

The Swedish parliament currently has a record number of independent MPs during this parliamentary term. Widding is one of them, along with former Social Democrat Jamal El Haj and former Left Party member Lorena Delgado Varas, who will appear on next week’s Politikbyrån.
