A public meeting in Klaksvík on Wednesday evening showed that a subsea tunnel to the island of Kalsoy is technically feasible and financially sustainable in the long run, according to Bjørn Kalsø, one of the event’s organisers. KVF reported on Thursday that Kalsø is optimistic the tunnel option will be chosen over a new ferry for the route.

Presentations at the meeting included route alignment, cost estimates and the use of Faroese labour, given by Mourits Joensen and Kristian Stórhamar, who both worked on an alternative alignment proposal for the Suðuroy tunnel. Fríðrik Heinesen, an engineer with Landsverk, discussed transport connections to Kalsoy, while Transport Minister Jacob Vestergaard outlined the government’s plans for the route. The mayor of Klaksvík and residents who commute daily from Kalsoy also spoke.

Kalsø welcomed the strong attendance and said the information presented gave him good reason to believe the tunnel will be preferred when a decision is made.
