Several people have been evacuated from a multi-storey building in Hamina, southeastern Finland, following an apartment fire that broke out early Thursday morning, according to the Kymenlaakso rescue service, as reported by the Finnish news agency STT.

Duty fire chief Antti Kosonen said at least 12 people had exited the six-storey building, and some of them were being examined by emergency medical personnel.

The fire started in an apartment on the third floor, which was completely destroyed, Kosonen said. The initial blaze has been extinguished, and the rescue service is now ventilating smoke from the stairwell.

The rescue service received the alarm about the fire on Riekontie at 4 a.m.
