New baby ambulances now available for critically ill children across Denmark
Two new and upgraded “babylancer” – ambulances specially designed for critically ill small children – are now operational, Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen announced, as reported by DR.
The hospital, together with the Capital Region’s Emergency Services, has replaced its single ten-year-old baby ambulance with two new vehicles. The new models are smaller to reduce wind resistance for optimal road performance and are soundproofed to minimise noise. They can accommodate a family with up to two children and can handle a standard ambulance stretcher so a mother can be transported lying down alongside her child if needed.
The baby ambulances function as mobile intensive care units. “It is about bringing highly specialised skills and equipment to the child as quickly as possible, and then we actually start treatment out there and continue it in the babylance on the way to Rigshospitalet,” said Morten Breindahl, chief physician at the Department of Intensive Care for Newborns and
