Individuals with dual citizenship can be stripped of their Swedish citizenship if convicted of crimes that seriously harm Sweden’s vital interests, the Riksdag decided on Wednesday, according to SVT Nyheter.

The decision also allows revocation for anyone who obtained Swedish citizenship on false grounds, provided they hold another nationality.

Because the change involves a constitutional amendment, a second vote after the next general election is required before it can take effect.

The amendment does not list which crimes qualify. That will be defined later in ordinary legislation. The government stated the term covers certain serious “system-threatening” crime committed within criminal networks.

The Left Party and the Green Party voted against the entire revocation proposal. The Centre Party opposed only the part concerning crimes.
