Wartime grenade disappears in Riihimäki before police arrive
A wartime grenade that was reported on a field near Riihimäki’s ice hall disappeared before police could secure the scene, according to the Finnish public broadcaster Yle’s local news for Kanta-Häme.
Police received a report around 2 p.m. from a member of the public who said they had spotted a possible grenade in the city’s Peltosaari district, the broadcaster reported. When officers arrived, the object was gone.
Police suspect the person who reported the discovery — or someone else — removed the grenade before the area was cordoned off.
Authorities urged anyone who took the grenade or knows its whereabouts to call the emergency number 112 immediately. The device may still be live and should not be handled.
The broadcaster noted that military explosives are found in the terrain several times a year, and that bringing such items to a police station typically triggers an evacuation of the building.
