The public prosecutor has dropped charges against the captain of the ferry Galaxy regarding an open stern port during a voyage to Suðuroy, but the chairman of the Maskinmeistarafelagið (Engine Officers’ Association) is not convinced by the explanation, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Arnfinn Bech, chairman of the union, said he was not surprised that the case has been dropped. On Tuesday, Chief Prosecutor Katrin Thorsvig Hansen stated that although it could be confirmed the stern port on Galaxy was open during the trip to Suðuroy on 1 September last year, it could not be proven that the port was open at departure.

Bech does not find this explanation convincing and said he has no confidence that the Galaxy’s logbook from the day the vessel sailed with an open stern port is reliable.
