The Faroe Islands will not need to extend the fisheries agreement with Iceland for the remainder of the year, Foreign Affairs and Fisheries Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen told local broadcaster KVF.

The agreement signed for this year was unusual in that it only applied until 31 July, with plans to renegotiate for the rest of the year. However, the new fisheries minister now considers an extension unnecessary.

According to Nielsen, nearly all of the allocated quota has already been fished. The bottom fish quota in Icelandic waters was 5,600 tons, of which 5,000 tons have been caught. He added that the herring is being fished in Norwegian waters and only 600 tons of the bottom fish quota remain in Icelandic waters.
