Danish police have established two stop-and-search zones in the Herning and Ikast areas of central Jutland following a series of violent incidents, including shootings, arson attacks and a hand grenade, according to DR.

Mid and West Jutland Police announced the measures in a press release, stating that the zones took effect on 19 May 2026 at 5 p.m. and will remain in place until 19 June 2026 at 5 p.m.

On 18 May, two shots were fired at an apartment in Herning. Shortly afterwards, two fires broke out in the nearby town of Ikast, which police believe were deliberately set. The following morning, a hand grenade was thrown onto a balcony at an apartment in Herning.

Police assess that the incidents are connected and represent an escalation of an ongoing violent conflict between individuals affiliated with two criminal groups.

Unusual for the area

Stop-and-search zones, known in Denmark as visitationszoner, give police the authority to search anyone within a defined area without needing individual grounds for suspicion. While the tool has been used in major Danish cities during gang conflicts, DR’s legal analyst Louise Dalsgaard said its use in this part of the country is highly unusual.

“Stop-and-search zones are a tool we have seen used in virtually all ongoing gang conflicts in recent years, but it is very unfamiliar outside the largest cities,” Dalsgaard said. “I cannot recall there ever being a stop-and-search zone in the Herning and Ikast area due to a conflict like this.”

Mid and West Jutland Police said they assess there to be a concrete and immediate risk that the conflict could lead to further violent confrontations involving weapons and other dangerous items.

According to Dalsgaard, the zones are intended to deter the warring parties from carrying weapons, as the risk of being detected increases significantly when police can search anyone at will.
