Vandalism damages historic stained glass at Høvik Church in Bærum, Norway

Høvik Church in Bærum, Norway, has suffered significant vandalism, including repeated incidents of stone-throwing that have shattered windows and damaged stained glass above the altar. Ingeborg Sommer, the local dean, reported that several windows have been destroyed, and there have been acts of vandalism and break-ins at the adjacent parish house.

The latest event occurred on Saturday night but follows a troubling pattern, with six such incidents recorded since May. “This is a recurring issue, but it has escalated in severity. The recent damage was much more severe,” Sommer noted, underscoring that each incident has been reported to the police, who are aware of the ongoing vandalism.

In light of these damages, Sunday’s church service will be relocated to the parish house next door to facilitate a thorough clean-up and assessment of the church. Sommer explained, “We want to document the damage properly before we use the church again,” emphasizing the need to coordinate with law enforcement and the insurance company.

The stained glass windows, some dating back to the church’s inauguration in 1898, are particularly precious, depicting the entire Biblical narrative across 31 panels. The recent vandalism has resulted in damage to these historic pieces. Sommer expressed hope for repairs but acknowledged the considerable costs and technical expertise required, stating, “It won’t be the same as the original art.”

The situation remains a source of sadness for both the church community and those who cherish its historical significance.
