Faroese prosecutors drop case over Galaxy ferry’s stern door

The Faroese public prosecutor has dropped charges against the operator of the passenger ferry Galaxy, concluding there is insufficient evidence to prove wrongdoing, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Prosecutors announced on Monday that the case would not proceed to trial, as they determined the burden of proof could not be met. The investigation followed a report from the Faroese Maritime Authority (Sjóvinnustýrið) in October last year, which had requested a police probe into potential regulatory breaches.

The decision hinged on doubts over whether the ferry’s stern door was open when it departed from Tórshavn on 1 September last year. While the door was confirmed open during the voyage to Suðuroy, prosecutors found no grounds to establish it had been left open at departure.

The Maritime Authority, which had no further comment, had initially flagged the incident for investigation.
