AGF championship celebrations draw 60,000 in Aarhus as fireworks and alcohol cause disruptions

Around 60,000 people took to the streets of Aarhus to celebrate AGF’s Superliga title on Sunday, with police reporting isolated incidents of fireworks being fired at officers and alcohol-related injuries, Danish broadcaster DR reports.

While authorities described the overall atmosphere as festive, officers were forced to intervene late Sunday night after a group of roughly 50 people set off large quantities of fireworks near Honnørkajen. Some directed pyrotechnics toward police, though no officers were injured, according to Brian Voss Olsen, a police inspector with Østjyllands Politi.

“They fired massive amounts of fireworks. We had to step in,” Olsen said. “Unfortunately, fireworks were also aimed at us. This is a serious offence under Section 119 of the penal code.” Police monitored the celebrations using drones and will review footage to identify those responsible.

Despite the incidents, Olsen praised the majority of fans for their behaviour. “It has been festive and enjoyable, even though emotions are running high. Unfortunately, some have broken the rules, and we will address that.”

Hospitals also saw an uptick in alcohol-related cases, with 30 to 35 people treated for injuries at Aarhus University Hospital’s emergency department. Most involved falls—including cyclists—while a small number were assault-related, said Lubna Rafiq Kokholm, chief physician at the acute care unit.

“All of these cases involved alcohol,” Kokholm noted. The hospital had preemptively called in extra staff, a move she described as necessary given the volume of patients.

AGF’s championship victory marked the club’s sixth Danish league title. Official celebrations are scheduled to continue Monday at Aarhus City Hall.
