A humpback whale found stranded off the coast of Anholt has been confirmed as Timmy, the same whale previously rescued in Germany, according to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Miljøstyrelsen).

The whale’s identity was verified using a tracking device recovered from its back, the agency told Danish news bureau Ritzau in a written statement. Earlier reports on Thursday had suggested no clear link to the German rescue case, though officials had not ruled it out entirely.

Timmy first made headlines in early March after stranding near Lübeck, Germany. Following failed attempts by authorities to free the whale, a group of German oil workers funded its relocation from the Baltic Sea to the North Sea.

The whale has been stranded roughly 75 metres offshore in the Kattegat since Thursday.
