Heavy rain is sweeping across Central Finland and Northern Savo, with some areas expected to receive 20 millimetres of rain in a single day—roughly a quarter of the typical monthly total, public broadcaster Yle reports.

Meteorologist Juha Jantunen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute told Yle that Northern Savo could see up to 20 millimetres of rain on Saturday, calling it “a considerable amount for a 24-hour period.” Temperatures in the rainy regions will remain below 15°C, with the rain moving northward as the day progresses.

The downpour has already brought significant rainfall to parts of South Savo and Southeast Finland. By Saturday morning, Mikkeli had recorded nearly 18 millimetres of rain, while Varkaus saw 15.4 millimetres. Lappeenranta and Kotka received around 10 millimetres each.

Drier conditions in the south, more rain in the north on Sunday
The weather will clear in southern and central Finland on Sunday, with temperatures potentially reaching 20°C in some areas. However, northern regions may still experience heavy rainfall, with 15–20 millimetres expected in places, according to Jantunen.
