A man has died after falling seven to eight metres into a crevasse in Norway’s Jotunheimen mountains on Friday evening, police confirmed.

The accident occurred on Smørstabbtindan peak, where the victim was recovered from the crevasse but later declared dead, Dagbladet reports. Authorities have notified the next of kin, who are receiving support from a crisis response team.

According to Frode Øverås, operations leader at Innlandet police district, the group the man was hiking with lacked proper safety equipment. Another nearby group assisted in retrieving the body using a hoist.

Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter and volunteers, responded to the scene after police were alerted at 17:18 local time. Weather conditions in the area were described as unstable, complicating the operation.

“We hoped for flying conditions so the helicopter could land at the site. This was a major rescue effort,” Øverås told Dagbladet.
