The captain of the Faroese trawler Norðborg has been fined 100,000 Danish kroner for exceeding fishing quotas in Icelandic waters, Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The vessel and another trawler, Hvalnes, were prosecuted in May for catching 99% more than their permitted quota in March last year. Court documents show Norðborg’s allocated quota was 107.26 tonnes, but the ship significantly exceeded this limit.

Prosecutors had sought a 600,000-kroner fine, though the court imposed the lower penalty. The captain told Kringvarp Føroya they would use the next 14 days to review the ruling before deciding whether to appeal.

A full interview with chief prosecutor Katrin Thorsvig Hansen is available via the broadcaster’s report.
