Norway’s 17 May celebrations will see shifting weather, with no region experiencing non-stop rain but also no widespread sunshine, according to the Meteorological Institute.

Redaksjonsmeteorolog Charalampos Sarchosidis told Dagbladet that forecasting this year’s conditions has been challenging due to rapid changes, particularly in southern Norway. “It’s difficult to communicate because the weather is so variable,” he said.

Northern Norway will fare best, with dry spells and temperatures reaching 16–19°C north of Bodø—the warmest in the country. Southern regions should prepare for intermittent rain showers, though Sarchosidis stressed no area will face continuous downpours. “There’ll be sun, then rain, then sun again,” he noted, calling it “typical 17 May weather.”

Temperatures will stay below 20°C nationwide, which the meteorologist described as “comfortable for those in bunad [traditional dress].” He advised keeping a compact umbrella handy but dismissed concerns of a “bad” national day weather-wise.

Forecast certainty varies by region: northern conditions are stable, while southern showers may shift. “I can’t be more specific than saying it’ll be changeable in the south,” Sarchosidis added.
