Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has undergone a coronary angioplasty, known as a balloon dilation, after being hospitalised with chest pains, the Danish Royal House announced on Monday.

The 83-year-old monarch remains in stable condition at Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet, where she is expected to stay for several more days as planned, according to a statement. The procedure targeted a narrowed coronary artery to improve blood flow to the heart.

Queen Margrethe was admitted to the hospital on Sunday afternoon after experiencing cardiac symptoms. The Royal House initially stated she would remain under observation over the weekend for further tests.

Danish health correspondent Peter Qvortrup Geisling told public broadcaster DR that the queen had likely received nitroglycerin to relieve pain, calling the angioplasty a “normal” intervention to address arterial narrowing and reduce the risk of blood clots.
