Possible drone sighting in Uusimaa causes alert but little disruption in Helsinki
A suspected drone sighting in southern Finland early Friday prompted an emergency warning, but authorities later confirmed the threat had passed, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.
The Finnish Ministry of the Interior issued a hazard alert overnight after at least one drone reportedly entered Finnish airspace in the Uusimaa region. By morning, officials stated the situation no longer posed a risk.
Residents react with caution but carry on
In Helsinki’s Kallio district and at the Central Railway Station, locals described a mix of curiosity and calm. Jooa Laakso, a Helsinki resident, told Yle he first noticed unusual aircraft noise at 7 a.m. before checking news reports.
“My first thought was whether I should go to work, since the alert advised against movement,” Laakso said. “But the all-clear came quickly, so I just monitored updates while doing my morning routine.” He noted recent drone activity near Finland’s eastern border, adding, “It’s good to keep the 112 emergency app handy for these alerts.”
Neea Laakso, another resident, woke to the news and briefly questioned whether she would make it to a morning meeting. Public transport was partially disrupted—buses were suspended, though metros and trams continued running. She arrived only slightly delayed.
Some see greater risks elsewhere
Stefan Burggraf, a Helsinki resident with German roots, said his family proceeded with their morning as usual. “I try to think in terms of probabilities—streets are statistically more dangerous than flying objects,” he said, adding that Finland’s civil defence systems, including bunkers, impressed him compared to Germany’s lack of similar infrastructure.
Reijo Heikkinen, visiting from Kuopio, had come to Helsinki’s Hakaniemi Market Square to buy flowers for his sister. “If [a drone] hits, it does damage, but the odds of it striking one person are low,” he said. Heikkinen, en route to a grandchild’s birthday in Espoo later Friday, dismissed fears: “I’ve followed these incidents before. There’s no point in panicking without more information.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the drone’s origin or whether it was part of a broader pattern of incursions into Finnish airspace.
