A police trainee who discharged a firearm during an incident in Jyväskylä in March will be permitted to continue studies at the Police University College, the institution announced Wednesday, Yle reports.

The student, undergoing practical training at the time, shot a man armed with a knife in the Keltinmäki district on March 3. The incident triggered a preliminary investigation, with the trainee facing suspicion of dereliction of duty and aggravated assault. The man with the knife is under investigation for robbery, violent resistance against an official, and illegal threats.

In April, Police University College rector Marko Laitinen stated that the school was evaluating whether to suspend the student’s studies pending the investigation. Following consultations with the Office of the Prosecutor General, the college decided against disciplinary action.

The case remains under investigation by authorities.
