Faroe Islands health committee proposes limits on personal medicine imports for travellers
A Faroese parliamentary committee has called for restrictions on the amount of prescription medication travellers can bring into the country for personal use, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
The Welfare Committee of the Faroese Parliament (Løgtingið) has urged the health minister to establish clear rules on how much medication visitors may carry for their own treatment. The proposal follows a Supreme Court ruling that permits individuals to import medicines purchased online for personal use, provided they are not available through Faroese pharmacies.
Under current Faroese regulations, prescription drugs for personal use cannot be legally obtained online. The committee argues that while the court’s decision applies broadly, it was not specifically intended for travellers entering the Faroe Islands. Authorities would receive guidelines and enforcement powers to monitor compliance under the proposed changes.
The move comes after a legal interpretation expanded personal import rights, prompting calls for clearer boundaries to prevent potential misuse.
