Finnish teacher boosts student motivation with moped exhibition linked to music studies
A music teacher in northern Finland organised a moped exhibition to encourage ninth-grade students to engage with their studies, combining youth culture with classroom learning, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
The event at Keminmaa Central School saw students showcase their mopeds and all-terrain vehicles, with judging and prizes sponsored by local bike shops. According to participants, the exhibition fostered school spirit and provided a rare opportunity to celebrate their vehicles—often a source of criticism—without stigma.
Music teacher Sanna Yliniva conceived the idea after noticing declining motivation among students last year. When asked what would inspire them, the answer was clear: mopeds. “Someone suggested a moped exhibition, and I ran with it,” Yliniva said. She emphasised that youth culture is too often overlooked in schools and society.
The project tied into music studies through planning the event’s playlist and sound system. Students also gained experience in organising a public event, with the exhibition serving as both a reward for their work and a motivational tool throughout the year.
Eighth-graders Pinja Laanila and Siiri Jäärni, who attended as voters, praised the break from routine. “It’s great that people who’ve put effort into their mopeds get to show them off properly,” Jäärni said. Ninth-grader Jooa Tepponen, who entered his own ATV, called the event “awesome” for bringing like-minded students together.
The exhibition’s success highlights how integrating student interests—even unconventional ones—can reinvigorate learning.
