Faroese fuel prices drop as competition increases
Fuel prices in the Faroe Islands have fallen after a new supplier entered the market, according to a report by Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
The price reduction followed the purchase of a fuel tanker by transport company Sp/F Thomsen in Hvalvík, which began selling heating oil to households. The move prompted the two established suppliers, Effo and Magn, to lower their listed prices.
While the price cut was not substantial enough to convince Gunnvá Akraberg Hansen, a resident of Miðtún in the eastern part of Tórshavn, to switch providers, it has sparked discussion about consumer behaviour. The issue was covered in the Dagur og vika programme, where Bjarni Dal-Christiansen of the Faroese Competition Authority appeared as a guest.
The Faroe Islands face high living costs, but increased competition could help drive prices down and influence consumer choices, the report noted.
