A decade-long review of fatal traffic accidents in Finland shows that drivers of heavy vehicles—such as trucks and buses—are rarely at fault in deadly crashes, public broadcaster Yle reports.

Finland’s traffic accident investigation boards examined 579 fatal collisions involving heavy vehicles between 2015 and 2024. In fewer than one in five cases was the truck or bus driver responsible for the crash. Instead, the driver of another motor vehicle was most often found to be at fault.

The findings cover accidents resulting in death where at least one heavy vehicle was involved.
