The Faroese Red Cross (Blái Krossur) is facing a funding shortfall of nearly one million Danish kroner as demand for its preventive services grows, according to a report by public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

Edva Jacobsen, the organisation’s chief secretary, told KVF that the national collection drive is expected to raise the missing amount, but the need is urgent. The rising demand is particularly driven by young people seeking support, she said.

The funds will support preventive work, including the operation of Kafein, a youth centre in the capital Tórshavn. The centre offers a free and relaxed space for young people, with activities such as board game nights on weekends, according to Sanna Hjaltalin Delgado, the centre’s leader.

“It’s very important that young people have a safe and good place to be in the capital,” Delgado said.

Beyond the youth centre, the Red Cross provides counselling and peer support for children, young people, and families in difficult situations. Alice Hammer, the daily manager, confirmed the effectiveness of these services, noting that evaluations show a clear need for such support among young people.

Jacobsen emphasised that the organisation is seeing increasing numbers of young people seeking help, straining its resources.
