Greenland’s premier demands clear agenda before meeting Trump’s envoy
Greenland’s premier, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, will only meet with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Greenland if a formal agenda is provided in advance, he told Danish broadcaster DR on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Democracy Summit in Copenhagen, Nielsen said he had not yet decided whether to meet with Jeff Landry, Trump’s envoy, who will attend next week’s Future Greenland conference in Nuuk. No representatives of Denmark’s caretaker government will participate in the event.
“We have been under this pressure for 15–16 months,” Nielsen said, referring to repeated US expressions of interest in Greenland. “If he wants a meeting, there must be a clear agenda. We know this game.”
The premier stressed that Greenland is “not for sale” and will not accept threats of a takeover. However, he remained open to discussions on business cooperation, natural resource extraction, and security—provided Greenland’s autonomy is respected.
“We are ready to do more, to take greater responsibility within the alliance [NATO] on international security,” Nielsen said. He added that Greenland seeks broader economic partnerships but insisted on respect for its “red lines.”
Nielsen also expressed frustration over Denmark’s prolonged government formation process, which he said complicates joint foreign and defence policy decisions for the Kingdom of Denmark, comprising both Greenland and Denmark.
“We need a Danish government soon. It would be helpful for us in Greenland,” he said.
