Faroese women have an average of 2.1 children, significantly higher than the European average of 1.3–1.4, according to a report by Faroese national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The data, published ahead of Mother’s Day, highlights that women in the Faroe Islands choose to become mothers more frequently and at a younger age than in most other European countries.

While local research on the topic remains limited, the figures raise questions about the factors contributing to the Faroe Islands’ relatively high fertility rate—and what measures may be needed to sustain it.
