Glacial flood warning issued for Mýrdalsjökull in Iceland

Saturday 27th July 2024 on 14:24 in Iceland Iceland

A glacial flood may soon occur at Mýrdalsjökull, according to recent observations. Increased electrical conductivity has been detected in rivers surrounding the glacier, suggesting that geothermal water may be leaking from underneath it.

The Meteorological Office issued a warning this morning based on gas measurements recorded at Láguhvola over the past 24 hours. Reports have also emerged of a sulfur smell near rivers originating from Mýrdalsjökull. In particular, the Skálm River near Road V412 has exhibited unusually high conductivity, prompting authorities to advise against venturing close to the sources of Múlakvíslar and Kötlujökull.

Further updates on the situation will be provided as it develops.
