A home renovation in the Danish town of Varde has sparked heated debate on social media over taste and architectural preservation, with critics calling the changes an assault on cultural heritage, DR reports.

A video comparing before-and-after images of the renovation has drawn 1.5 million views, accompanied by a flood of negative comments. Many users argue that such drastic alterations destroy the character of traditional housing.

Pernille Vermund, a trained architect and member of parliament for the Liberal Alliance party, defended homeowners’ right to modify their properties as they see fit.

“As long as it’s within their own four walls, people should be free to do what they want. They’re not taking anything away from anyone,” Vermund told DR’s Deadline programme.

But cultural commentator Anne Sophia Hermansen, writing for Weekendavisen, sees the backlash as a sign of shifting attitudes, particularly among younger generations.

“People increasingly feel our housing stock is under attack from too many new and flashy ideas,” she said. “I think most of these comments come from younger people. There’s something new at play—a youth asking, ‘Can’t we preserve at least a little tradition?’ And I see that as a kind of bourgeois awakening.”

The debate reflects broader tensions between individual freedom and collective responsibility for architectural heritage.
