The municipality of Juuka in North Karelia is providing crisis support following the death of a 12-year-old boy in a traffic accident on Saturday evening, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

Flags at Poikola Comprehensive School will fly at half-mast in memory of the boy, who died at the scene after a van struck him while he was crossing Nunnanlahdentie road on a moped. School staff will offer students discussion-based support, with the municipality, local Lutheran parish, and the Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority coordinating ongoing assistance.

The Juuka youth centre has also opened its doors, with adults present to provide support. “No one will be left alone,” said municipal manager Henri Tanskanen.

The collision occurred around 7 p.m. on Saturday in the Tervonkangas area. Police are investigating the incident as a potential traffic safety violation.
