Aarhus Football Club wins first Danish championship in 40 years
Aarhus GF (AGF) has secured its first Danish Superliga title in 40 years after a 2-0 away victory over Brøndby IF on Sunday, reports Danish broadcaster DR. The win sparked mass celebrations in Denmark’s second-largest city, where fans, players, and officials gathered to mark the historic moment.
The championship was decided after FC Midtjylland’s 0-0 draw with FC Nordsjælland earlier in the day, leaving AGF with a chance to clinch the title. The team seized the opportunity with a decisive win, ending a four-decade wait for the trophy.
Thousands of supporters filled central Aarhus, including Lille Torv and Telefontorvet squares, where spontaneous street parties erupted. Fans also celebrated outside Brøndby Stadium, where around 2,000 travelling supporters joined players and staff in post-match jubilation.
AGF’s players, including Patrick Mortensen, Felix Beijmo, and Frederik Tingager, along with coach Jakob Poulsen, shared their reactions after the game. Club director Jacob Nielsen declared a week-long celebration, culminating in an official ceremony after the team’s final home match on Sunday, May 17.
Aarhus Municipality will host a formal reception on Monday, May 18, at 17:00 on the City Hall Square balcony, where the team will be honoured. The championship trophy will be displayed for the first time following the last match of the season.
The victory marks one of the most significant moments in the club’s history, with fans—some of whom have waited their entire lives for this moment—describing the day as unforgettable.
