Some 23,000 runners took to the streets of Copenhagen on Sunday for the city’s annual marathon, where Valdemar Meiling, a relative newcomer to the sport, secured an unexpected victory in the Danish national championship.

The 23-year-old athlete from Sparta Atletik og Løb crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 32 seconds, claiming the title of Denmark’s fastest marathon runner. His win came as a surprise after another competitor appeared set to take the lead just before the finish. Meiling, who has only been running for three years, told Danish broadcaster DR that he struggled to grasp his new status as the country’s top marathoner.

The race also served as the Danish national championship, with Meiling finishing 18th overall. The event’s outright winner was Tadesse Kassa of Ethiopia, who completed the 42.195-kilometre course in 2:08:26—just three seconds shy of the event’s record time. Mercy Chebwogen of Kenya was the fastest woman, finishing in 2:22:08.

Organisers reported that all 23,000 participant slots sold out within 23 hours when registration opened last May. The race drew runners of all levels, from first-timers to seasoned competitors, including Line Petersen and Kamilla Thomsen, who marked their 42nd birthdays by tackling the 42-kilometre distance.

Costumed participants added to the event’s festive atmosphere, with runners dressed as sharks, Star Wars characters, and even a Yoda figure being pushed in a wheelchair. Spectators lined the route with homemade signs, cheering on friends and family.
