AGF on brink of first Danish football title in 40 years
AGF could secure the Danish Superliga championship on Sunday for the first time since 1986, according to a report by Danish broadcaster DR.
The Aarhus-based club, nicknamed De Hviie (The Whites), enters the final matchday with a two-point lead over rivals FC Midtjylland. A victory against Brøndby IF, combined with a FC Midtjylland loss to FC Nordsjælland, would clinch the title immediately. Even a draw could suffice depending on other results.
Michael “Jøden” Christiansen, a rapper and host of the AGF fan podcast Hvid Røg, admitted the tension is overwhelming. “I’m getting more and more nervous,” he told DR. “I can’t sleep—there’s a reason I’m here [in the studio] and not at home.” While a second-place finish would still exceed expectations, he said the prospect of falling short now feels like a disappointment.
The last time AGF won the league was 1986, making this potential triumph a historic moment for generations of fans. Christiansen recalled the city’s euphoric reaction to their 2020 bronze medal—comparing it to liberation celebrations—and predicted an even greater outpouring if gold is secured. “The city will explode,” he said.
Should results not fall AGF’s way today, the title race will extend to the final round next weekend. AGF previously won bronze in 2020 (their first medal in 23 years) and again in 2023.
