Halla Tómasdóttir, the incoming President of Iceland, has clarified that it was not her intention for her car purchase to be made public. A photograph of her and her husband, Björn Skúlason, was posted on social media by the car dealership Brimborg, featuring them with the dealership’s CEO, Ágúst Jóhannsson. Halla stated that she was unaware of the image’s posting until it became a topic of interest later in the day.

In her statement, she requested the removal of the photo as soon as she learned of its existence on social media, a request that was promptly honored. Halla emphasized that she and her husband did not seek any special treatment in their purchase; they received a cash payment discount comparable to what they were offered in previous transactions with the dealership, which is also extended to other customers.

Halla explained her decision to refrain from further media engagements following the elections until her official inauguration, stating that she has yet to assume the presidential role and thus does not speak from that authority. She acknowledged the choice to purchase an environmentally friendly vehicle, seeing it as a potential positive example for others, but reiterated that their car purchase was not meant to be public news.

Overall, the situation highlights the intersection of public interest and personal privacy for elected officials, as well as the importance of transparency regarding their dealings.
